Pte Thomas ANDREWS | Thomas Andrews was born in Bristol but was resident in Ledbury Workhouse and described as a farm labourer in 1911. He was wounded in France in 1917 and invalided out. After hospital treatment he returned to his family in Ledbury but died shortly afterwards. |
L/Cpl Charles Thorne BAGGOTT | Charles Baggott was born in Ledbury in September 1888. His father was James Baggott who married Marie Lambert in 1876 in Ledbury. He was one of a family of five with two older brothers Alfred and William. He died in France on the first day of the battle of Arras 9th April 1917 while serving with the King's (Liverpool Regiment). He was unmarried. |
S Q S Stephen Benjamin BARNETT | Stephen Barnett was born in Ledbury. He was married to Frances Barnett and lived at "Glenwood". He enlisted in Ledbury and died in Egypt in October 1918. |
Pte Frederick BARTLETT | Frederick Bartlett was the son of Robert and Amy Bartlett of Wareham, Dorset. He was married to Rose Amy Bartlett and they lived at "Cardiff Cottage", Wellington Heath, near Ledbury. |
Sgt William Ernest BEALE MM & BAR | William Beale was born in Ledbury and living at Newtown, Ledbury at the start of the war. In 1901 his father had died and together with his mother and elder brother, John, he was living with his stepfather, John Pritchard, in Homend Street. His step-brother was Thomas Pritchard (see below). He enlisted in Hereford and received the Military Medal and Bar in December 1916. He died of wounds in Flanders in November 1918. 15th Btn? |
Pte Walter BRADLEY | Walter Bradley was born in Ledbury and enlisted in the army in Ledbury while living with his parents, George and Mary Bradley at "Knoll View", Victoria Road, Newtown, Ledbury. He was killed in action in Gallipoli aged 19. He was unmarried. |
Spr James BROWN | James Brown was born in Ledbury and married to Fanny Brown. They lived at "Home Lawn", Homend Street, Ledbury. In 1901 his age is given as 23 so he would have been around 40 at the time of his death in December 1918. |

Pte John CALE | John Cale was born in Ledbury and enlisted in Hereford. His parents William and Mary Anne Cale lived at 25 Mill Street, Hereford and he was married to Minnie M.D.Cale. He was killed in action in Flanders in April 1916 aged 28. |
Pte George L. CARTER | George Carter was born in Aconbury, the son of Lewis and Annie Carter of 26 Homend Street, Ledbury. His father was a Steam Roller Engine driver. |
Stoker Benjamin CHADD | Benjamin Chadd was the eldest son of James and Emma Chadd of Southend Street, Ledbury. He was born in Ledbury and married to Fanny Louisa Chadd. Before the war he was awarded the Messina Medal. This was an Italian medal awarded to those who landed to help in the relief operations after the earthquake in Sicily in December 1908. He died on the cruiser HMS 'Good Hope' when she was sunk by the cruisers 'Scharnhorst' and 'Gneisenau' off the coast of Chile on 1st November 1914. |
Tele Robert C. CHADD | Robert Chadd was the youngest son of James and Emma Chadd of Southend Street, Ledbury. He was born in Ledbury and unmarried. HMS 'Pelorus' was a light cruiser in the Aegean Squadron, based at Suda Bay, Crete. |
Sergt Walter Clifford CHADD | Walter Chadd was born in Ledbury and lived with his widowed mother, Emma Chadd, at 63 Albert Road, Newtown, Ledbury at the start of the war. He was the brother of Benjamin and Robert Chadd. He enlisted in Ledbury and was killed in action in Egypt in November 1917. |

He was the son of Henry and Emma Christopher and one of ten children all born in Ledbury. His father was a railway platelayer, originally from Sellack in Herefordshire. His father was from Dymock, near Ledbury. |
Lieut Reginald HOWELL | Reginald Howell was the son of Thomas and Sophia Howell, of The Feathers Hotel, Ledbury who moved to Fareham, Hampshire. He was reported as wounded and taken prisoner in the Ledbury Guardian April 6, 1918. |

He was married to Florence Mary Owens and they had a daughter, Elsie Honor, born in 1910. He was a monumental mason and enlisted in Hereford initially into the Herefordshire Regiment and was killed in action near Arras. |

Pte Arthur PEDLINGHAM | Arthur Waving Pedlingham was born in Ledbury. He was the son of John and Alice Pedlingham who kept a grocers shop at 6 Southend St., Ledbury. His battalion landed at Suvla Bay, Turkey on 9th August 1915 and he died in action eight days later. |

P-O John POTTER | John Potter died from Turkish gunfire on board HMS 'Canopus' in the Dardanelles in support of an Allied landing on the Gallipoli peninsula on 25th April 1915. |
Pte Philip John PREECE | Jack Preece was born in Ledbury the son of John and Ellen Beatrice Preece of 14 Homend Crescent, Ledbury. His father was a solicitor’s clerk. Philip enlisted at St Pancras, London. The 2nd DCLI landed at Havre on 21st December 1914 and entered the trenches at St. Eloi, situated in the Salient just south of Ypres. On March 14th 1915 at 5:30pm, the Germans launched a surprise attack on St Eloi exploding two mines under the British position, disabled two machine guns posts, and stormed the trenches forcing the British troops back through St Eloi. They were in control of the village by nightfall. Philip died there that day. |

Pte William Ernest PROTHERO | The 1911 census records that William Ernest Prothero was born in Longtown, Herefordshire, the eldest son of William and Emma Elizabeth Prothero of Homend Street (living in Abergavenny in 1911). Ledbury war memorial has initials W.C. and the CWGC record has his name as William Charles Prothero but confirms his age and parents names. |
L/Cpl Harold Victor PUDGE | Vic Pudge was the youngest child of Henry and Mary Pudge of the Pheasant Hotel, Welland. He was married to Mary Irene Barker shortly before he joined the army in May 1916 and they lived in New Street, Ledbury. |
Pte William John RANFORD | William Ranford was born in Ledbury, the son of Joseph A. and Annie Ranford of “Elms Leighrdquo;, Wellington Heath near Ledbury. He and his father worked on a fruit farm. |
C.S.M. George Henry RICH | George Rich was the son of George H. and Alice Rich of New Street, Ledbury living two doors away from the Hiner family (see above). His father came from Kent. His wife was Ethel Rich. |
Lieut Thomas ROGERS | Thomas Rogers was the son of Thomas and Alice Jane Rogers of Belle Orchard, Ledbury. He was born in Hartlebury, Worcestershire. He was an Observer Officer in the R.N.A.S. and drowned in seaplane operations at Ostend on 19th June 1917. |
Pte Charles William SELLEY | Charles Selley was the eldest son of Thomas Charles and Jane Selley of Mabels Furlong, Ledbury. He was reported missing in action in the Ledbury Guardian of 19th January 1918. |
Gnr Thomas Bennett SHINN | Thomas Shinn was born in Ledbury but living with his wife in Stroud at the start of the war. He was the youngest son of Thomas B. and Fanny Shinn who lived in Homend Street in 1901. His father was a carpenter. |
Pte Mervyn Whittenbury SMITH | Mervyn Smith was the son of Harry Vernon and Catherine Ellen Smith of 31 Homend Street, Ledbury. |
Pte Frank SMITH | Frank Smith was born in Ledbury in 1887. He was the son of Benjamin and Annie Smith. His wife was Evelyn Zeada Smith and they lived at 148 Union Lane, Ledbury. He was a bricklayer's labourer in 1901 and he joined up with the 2611 Herefordshire Regiment in Hereford. He was killed in action in Flanders in October 1918 aged 31. |
Rflmn A. Dennis SMITH | Dennis Smith was born in Ledbury and was Frank Smith's younger brother. He had moved to Coventry by the start of the war and joined up in Marylebone, London. He was killed in action in Flanders in October 1917 aged 26. |

Pte John STAUNTON | John Staunton was born in Ledbury, the eldest son of Andrew James and Elizabeth Ann Staunton, of “High House”, Parkway near Ledbury. He died in June 1916 aged 21. |

A.B. James THEAK(E)STONE | The son of Edward and Emily Theakestone of Bradlow, Ledbury. Living at St. Pancras, London when he enlisted. The White Star liner R.M.S. 'Laurentic' was requisitioned by the Admiralty as an armed merchant cruiser. On 25th January 1917 on a voyage to New York, she struck a mine off the northern coast of County Donegal, Ireland and sank with the loss of 350 people. |
Pte Frank WALTERS | Frank Walters was born in Ledbury, the son of William and Emma Walters of Belle Orchard, Ledbury. His father was a bricklayer. Frank joined up in Merthyr and died of wounds in England. He is buried in Ledbury Cemetery. |
Pte Charles Dennis WARREN | Charles Warren was born in Ledbury, the son of Andrew and Olive Warren of Lower Cross, Ledbury. His father was a house furnisher. Charles enlisted in Hereford and died of wounds in Gallipoli in November 1915 aged 20. |
Pte Frederick K. George WATKINS | Frederick Watkins was born in Ledbury, the son of George and Alice Walkins of Southend Street, Ledbury. His father was from the village of Pendock and his mother from Eastnor, both near Ledbury. |
2nd Lieut John Howe WATTS | John Watts was the son of Thomas and Alice Watts. He was born at Pendoylan near Cowbridge, South Glamorgan. In 1911, he was working as a bank clerk in Ledbury and boarding with Sarah Ruscoe in the Southend. |
Lieut Harold D. WILKS | Harold Douglas Wilks was born in Ledbury, the son of Roland Herbert and Susan E. Wilks. By 1911, his mother had died and his father had a grocery and china shop in High Street, Ledbury. Harold had left home by then and was working as Clerk to the master of Epsom Workhouse, John White. |
